There are a number of children enrolled in Brazilian schools that have been living in Japan for a considerable amount of time, yet cannot demonstrate sufficient proficiency in Japanese. Meanwhile, these students must have a certain level of Japanese proficiency in order to keep a wide variety of options open for the future. At the request of a Brazilian school, we implemented a Blended-Learning program that combined classroom lessons in the Brazilian school with e-learning courses offered by the university. Three eighth-year students from the Brazilian school who had only a beginning level of Japanese proficiency participated. The e-learning was in two forms, a school study and an interactive study. The interactive learning focused on practical Japanese usage and related vocabulary to complement the grammar and sentence structure focus of classroom instruction. In addition, the interactive learning utilized small study groups divided by level of proficiency, in contrast to the combined-level group structure of the classroom. The study made use of a toll-free IP telephone and web camera, and looked at problems and instructional methods particular to distance learning.

Margaret Ballagh came to Japan in 1861 with her husband James Ballagh, missionary of the Dutch Reformed Church of the United States. She published a book named Glimpses of Old Japan 1861-1866 in 1908. This book is a collection of the letters which she sent to her close friends at home during her first stay in Japan. They show her fresh and genuine response to Japanese people and society. Encountering the turmoil of the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Margaret also gave her own analysis of politics and international relations. This paper surveys the contents of Glimpses of Old Japan 1861-1866 and points out the distinct features of Margaret's observation about old Japan.

Dictionaries in Ancient Japanese have been inflected by Chinese Dictionaries. These are divided into three classes, Bushu(部首:parts of Kanji), Igi(意義:meanings of Kanji)and Jion(字音:readings of Kanji)from the point of view about there search systems. These systems were not fit for Japanese Language. And so, Dictionaries by the use of Iroha(イロハ)search system were composed in late Heian period. "Iroha-jiruisyō" is one of them. This study analyzes the tone 'Toku-syō'(徳声)in "Iroha-jiruisyō".

Sir William Dugdale was an antiquary who devoted himself to the recreation of the past in his writings. He was the author of renowned antiquairian studies such as Monasticon Anglicanum, The Antiquities of Warwickshire, and The History of St. Paul's Cathedral in London, which were published in the 1650s. His exceptional diligence allowed him to complete all these learned works, but of course it was not at all possible without the aid of other people who supported him by providing documents, introducing people, or evenpartially bearing the expense of publishing his books. This study aims to examine the relationships between Dugdale and those who supported him, especially in terms of the publication of St. Paul's. By so doing we hope to cast light on the social milieu of antiquarian studies in the Commonwealth of England of the 1650s.

The Meiji Restoration (1868) required Japanese to create a new kind of written language appropriate for describing modern Japan. Some novelists maintained a traditional style influenced by the Chinese classics, others actively learned new expressions from translations of Western literature. Horiguchi Daigaku was one of the most important of the translators through the Meiji, Taishô and Shôwa periods. He cultivated his passion for literature by composing traditional verse in the genre called Tanka and also Shintaishi (a new style of poetry), and further translated French poetry. Gekka no ichigun(Poets Under the Moon), a translation volume of 340 poems written by 66 French poets, was published in 1925 and it gave an excellent start to his career as a translator. Aside from poetry, he translated some French modernist novels, especially the fiction of Paul Morand. Most Japanese translations of Morand's novels were made by Horiguchi and Morand had been unknown before Horiguchi introduced him to Japanese literary society. Horiguchi repeatedly wrote of Morand as a modernist writer and argued his language was exotic and novel. This perspective undeniably influenced Japanese readers' views of Morand's works. This paper will focus on three issues in order to investigate how the reputation of Paul Morand was created in Japanese literary society of the 1920s and 1930s. First of all, evaluating Horiguchi Daigaku as a translator in respect of his influence on the reputation of Morand's works. Second, describing how Horiguchi's reading of Morand's novels guided readers' understanding of Morand's use of language and alsoof the author himself. Third, drawing a picture of how literary society in Japan at that time vitally needed something exotic that could satisfy their aspiration for western/ modern culture. I will demonstrate howMorand's Japanese translations were influenced by Horiguchi's reputation as a translator, his essays on Morand and contemporary Japanese literary trends.

Automobiles are one of the most significant inventions not only in society but also in cultures in the United States. We can often find its symbolic use in the works of American writers, and Paula Vogel is no exception. This paper examines how she depicts cars in The Long Christmas Ride Home and How I Learned to Drive. The Long Christmas Ride Home tells a story of seemingly typical American family. All the characters are played by puppets and performers. The puppets make it easier for the audience to imagine their invisible cars, which confines the family within its small space; the family cannot escape from the car. The car is sometimes regarded as their home, and other times it is like a human being, one of the family members who share their mortality. On the other hand, How I Learned to Drive focuses on the relationship between the niece and the uncle who teachers her how to drive as well as sexually abuses her in the car. Here Vogel makes the best use of the sexual images of automobiles in American society. Furthermore Vogel show the similarities between cars and human bodies; they both offer the joy of gratifying any deadly impulse and of controlling everything. Thus, these two plays theatrically reveal the close connection between a human body and car.
